1Sam14:43

Here is a portion of Scripture that I find confusing. This interaction between father and son even has the translators confused. KJ and ESV end Jonathan's words with a period, as if to say he was agreeing with the death sentence. NIV ends with a ? which looks like he is argueing. Then NASB and NKJ use a ! which leaves it up to the reader to decide Jonathan's tone. It seems to me that Saul was way out of line in calling down this curse but he was king. Wasn't Jonathan also out of line for complaining about his father even though he was right? It looks like there were problems in their relationship, starting with Jonathan not telling his dad what his plans were. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I tend to get snagged up with these kind of questions and miss the main point.

  1. It is a bit confusing, I think because... who can understand the heart of a man?! I certainly did not like that Saul cursed anyone who ate. He acted out of emotions and impulse too often. I think Jonathan accepted that he would have to die, since he broke the rule Saul made. The cool thing is that God intervened thru the people and Jonathan wasn't killed for this offense.
My confusion today is in the psalm. IS is ok or not that David prays for God to curse and destroy his enemies? OR is this not "ok or not ok" but just an honest prayer from the human heart...full of faith and full of emotion?

  2. I do think that David's prayer was honest emotion coming from a heart that was truly hurt, but I don't want to pray for God to curse someone because they are so bad and bless me because I am so good. Pleading our case before our God and asking Him to be our defense is always a wise thing to do.
